It was only a matter of time until porridge became popular in über hipster Berlin. Confirmation of this is an investment by Katjes, the well-known German sweets producer.
Haferkater (who’s name plays on the German words hafer = oats, and kater = a male cat, but which also means a hangover) has been selling porridge and coffee in a number of Berlin cafes. After the investment from Katjesgreenfood, however, they plan to expand this.
The investment has seen Katjes take 10% of the start-up which was founded by Leandro Burguete, Anna Schubert and Levin Siert in Berlin in 2015. In three cafes they now offer porridge with various toppings and three other sales outlets in other German cities will be added this year.
“Haferkater will also conquer other cities with Porridge and can count on an experienced partner with Katjesgreenfood,” the three founders have stated.
Haferkater is the fourth company to join Katjesgreenfood after Veganz, Caté and Hemptastic. The investment arm of the confectionery manufacturer Katjes has not made public the purchase price, however, the company has previously stated that individual start-up investments will range from 200,000 to several million.
