University of Jena and the Australian National University Agree on Common Doctoral Programme

On September 13th 2016, The University of Jena and the Australian National University reached an agreement on a “Dual PhD Programme” providing future opportunities for young academics at both institutions. The “Dual PhD Degree Programme” will initially run for eight years.

The agreement will effectively put into action the cooperative work on an institutional level which has been taking place over a decade.

“The Australian National University is an important partner for our focus photonics and the Abbe Center of Photonics”, said Prof. Heinzel, vice-president of the University of Jena.

The dual PhD programme will build on the numerous existing joint research projects but, importantly, will encourage and develop the lively mutual exchange among doctoral students and scientists.

“Almost a hundred joint scientific publications in the field of optics and photonics, alone, have emerged thus far from the cooperation,” said Heinzel.

For the ANU, the Friedrich-Schiller University in Jena is an important strategic partner in Germany. In addition to several other universities, such as the Humboldt University in Berlin and the Technical University in Munich, it is one of the selected partners with whom the ANU is currently working out joint research proposals. The aim of these projects is to generate not only scientific knowledge, but it also bring innovations and encourage commercialisation of the outcomes.

The programme means that PhD candidates will spend about a third of their doctoral studies in each of the respective research institutions. They will have a supervisor both from Jena and Australia, and the doctoral thesis must meet the requirements of both institutions. The first students will graduate from the programme in 2019.
